(January 30, 2013 – Cornwall, ON) Corus Entertainment’s CJSS-FM and Variety 104.5, along with Baxtrom’s Your Independent Grocer, Delaney Bus Lines Ltd. and Boys and Girls Club of Cornwall/SD&G, proudly support Pink Shirt Day on Wednesday, February 27, a day where Cornwall and area residents are encouraged to wear something pink to symbolize community unity against bullying.
Throughout the month of February, CJSS-FM and Variety 104.5 will focus its on-air programming on anti-bullying messages and promote the sale of pink t-shirts with funds being directed to the Boys & Girls Club of Cornwall/SD&G and their local bully-free programs.
“CJSS-FM and Variety 104.5 are proud to be a part of Pink Shirt Day and the anti-bullying message that is galvanizing communities across the country,” said JJ Johnston, Regional General Manager, Eastern Ontario, Corus Radio, “We’re confident that we will reach our goal of selling 4,000 pink t-shirts and paint Cornwall ‘pink’ for the day.”
Pink Shirt Day originated from a school incident several years ago when two Nova Scotia high school students organized a school protest to show support to a new Grade 9 student who was bullied for wearing pink. The two students handed out pink shirts to all males in the school to make a non-violent statement that bullying is unacceptable.
“At Boys & Girls Club of Cornwall/SD&G, we see the impact of bullying first-hand,” said Kristina Allard, Acting Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Cornwall/SD&G. “Pink Shirt Day is a continuation of our efforts to increase awareness of bullying as an ongoing problem that demands attention. On February 27, communities across Canada will stand up to bullying by wearing pink.”
This year’s Pink Shirts are unique to Cornwall/SD&G as they are bilingual to reflect the community.
